Special Features:

This Glenrothes matured for 47 years in a refill sherry hogshead. It was distilled on 10 June 1974 and bottled from cask 9973 on 22 December 2021. Gordon & MacPhail selected the single cask for the Private Collection; it yielded 126 bottles at 45.5%. This is the whisky's natural cask strength: it was not reduced to a standard bottling strength.

Dried fruit and spice shape the nose, while caramel, oak and a subtle smoky nuance complement the full-bodied palate. The whisky is neither chill-filtered nor coloured. It is presented in a wooden case with a geometric wood design and black-and-gold lettering.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals intense dried-fruit and spice notes, accompanied by a hint of vanilla.
• Palate: The whisky is full-bodied on the palate. Caramel and oak combine with a subtle smoky note in the background.

Distillery/Bottler:

Glenrothes Distillery is located in Rothes, between Elgin and Dufftown in Speyside. This is where the single malt was distilled in 1974. The distillery was founded in 1878; a small loan from the local church helped complete its construction.

Gordon & MacPhail has been rooted in Elgin since 1895 and, as an independent bottler, is responsible for the cask maturation and selection of this release. The family-owned company matches spirit from Scottish distilleries with casks made to its own specifications. For the Private Collection, the directors, including members of the third and fourth generations of the Urquhart family, select special casks. The single-cask releases carry their vintage, cask number and natural cask strength. For this Glenrothes, Gordon & MacPhail oversaw maturation in sherry hogshead 9973 and bottled the whisky in 2021.
