Special Features:

Fireside Tales is the twelve-year-old Lagavulin edition in the Diageo Special Releases 2024. This Islay single malt matured in a combination of first-fill ex-bourbon and refill casks. Active oak and bourbon-cask sweetness soften the powerful peat smoke without masking Lagavulin's distinctive character. The 0.2-litre bottle contains the whisky at a cask strength of 57.4%; it is non-chill-filtered and contains no colouring.

Toffee, vanilla and coconut provide a sweet counterpoint to the peat smoke, accompanied by aromatic spice notes. A few drops of water can bring the sweeter cask notes further forward and soften the alcoholic strength.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose is rather gentle and dry. Fresh, clear peat-smoke notes emerge immediately, recalling a smouldering fire on a distant beach.
• Palate: On the palate, the whisky is smooth, creamy and mouth-filling. Pronounced initial sweetness quickly gives way to a drier impression with a little salt and restrained smoke.
• Finish: The long finish becomes intensely smoky and dry towards the end. Warming spice notes linger in the aftertaste.

Distillery/Bottler:

John Johnston founded Lagavulin in 1816 on Islay's southern coast, around three kilometres from Port Ellen. The distillery stands on Lagavulin Bay near the ruins of Dunyveg Castle and uses distinctive pear-shaped stills. Its richly flavoured, heavily peated whiskies are shaped by the island's maritime surroundings. Whisky has been made on this bay for more than two centuries.

Lagavulin is part of Diageo's Scotch whisky portfolio. Fireside Tales comes from the distillery and was released as an official bottling within the Diageo Special Releases 2024. Stuart Morrison oversees the Special Releases as Master Blender.
