Special Features:

The ten-year-old Laphroaig is the distillery's core expression, matured in ex-bourbon barrels. Malted barley is first exposed to peat smoke at a low temperature and then dried. Subsequent cask maturation brings together its powerful medicinal, maritime smoke and the sweetness of vanilla and caramel. The former bourbon barrels contribute the influence of their charred oak.

The standard 40% version is chill-filtered and bottled with added colouring. Its profile remains unmistakable: pronounced peat, seaweed and medicinal notes meet sweetness and salty accents. This official distillery bottling comes in a 0.7-litre bottle with gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: On the nose, intense peat smoke and seaweed mingle with medicinal notes and a hint of sweetness.
  • Palate: The palate reveals a surprising sweetness with salty accents and pronounced peat. Medicinal notes reminiscent of fabric plasters appear alongside seaweed and black pepper. Vanilla, caramel and sweet oak notes round out the powerful impression.
  • Finish: The finish lingers, leaving a sweet seaweed impression.

Distillery/Bottler:

Laphroaig Distillery was established in 1815 on Islay's south coast, growing out of the business run by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston. Water from the Kilbride Stream, its own malting floor and its historic peat kilns remain part of its production methods today. The barley is turned daily on the malting floor; the windows allow the temperature to be regulated with cool Atlantic air. In the kilns built in 1840, the still-moist barley absorbs peat smoke before drying begins.

Double distillation takes place in three copper wash stills and four copper spirit stills. Slow distillation and the elevated connections to the condensers limit heavy oils in the spirit. The ex-bourbon maturation central to the ten-year-old expression stems from ideas introduced by Ian Hunter and carried forward by Bessie Williamson. She took over the distillery in 1954 and made this cask choice an enduring part of production.
