Malt Riot Vat No.6 combines Glasgow 1770 The Original with five different single malts from Speyside. The blend consists entirely of single malt whiskies and contains no grain whisky. Alongside vanilla and toffee apples, there are notes of pear and apricot. A gentle spiciness complements its soft character.

The name recalls Scotland’s malt tax protests of 1725. In Glasgow, people barricaded malt stores and drove out tax collectors; the unrest subsequently spread to other parts of Scotland. The Glasgow Distillery launched Malt Riot in June 2020 as a tribute to this resistance.

The whisky is bottled at 40% alcohol. It can be enjoyed neat, paired with ginger ale over ice or used in a Whisky Sour.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The aroma first recalls freshly planed oak, then sweet vanilla pastries. A hint of hyacinth adds a floral accent.
• Palate: Toffee-coated apples initially take centre stage on the palate. Dry spice notes and caramelised pineapple follow.
• Finish: The finish is light and soft. Milk chocolate, fruit and nut notes linger with gentle spice.

Distillery/Bottler:

Liam Hughes and Mike Hayward founded The Glasgow Distillery Company Ltd. in December 2012. They established the distillery in a converted warehouse in Hillington, on the outskirts of Glasgow. The company’s name refers to a historic Glasgow distillery whose story began in 1770 and which closed in 1902. The present-day distillery filled its first whisky cask on 5 March 2015; its first Glasgow 1770 Single Malt was released in 2018.

Whisky production initially relied on the copper stills Tara and Mhairi. Their compact design allows extensive copper contact and supports the fruity character of the new-make spirit. In 2019, the distillery added two stills of the same design, named Frances and Margaret, to the original pair. With Malt Riot, the company combines its own single malt production with the selection and blending of whiskies from other Scottish distilleries.
