Special Features:

Bourbon and red wine casks shape The Oamaruvian Doublewood. Distilled in Dunedin, this single malt first matured in American ex-bourbon casks before receiving a finish in Oamaru in French oak casks that had previously held New Zealand red wine. Dried fruit, gentle spices and maritime nuances come together in its character.

This four-year-old release comes from cask 1180 and was bottled in February 2022 at a cask strength of 52.4%. The release comprises 552 numbered bottles. The whisky is non-chill filtered and contains no added colouring. The 0.5-litre bottle comes in black gift packaging.

Alongside its fruity and spicy impressions, the whisky offers toffee notes, floral aromas and a mouthfeel reminiscent of cream soda. A hint of tannin complements the sweet fruit notes.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: The nose offers floral notes.
  • Palate: On the palate, rich toffee notes accompany a mouthfeel reminiscent of cream soda.
  • Finish: The finish reveals a hint of sea spray.

Distillery/Bottler:

The story of The New Zealand Whisky Collection began with the rescue of remaining New Zealand whisky stocks. Warren and Debbie Preston moved the casks from a former aircraft hangar to Oamaru. The two winemakers recognised the potential of the historic harbour district as a maturation site and chose casks previously used for New Zealand red wine. Greg Ramsay acquired the business with a group of investors in 2009 and continued the range under the name The New Zealand Whisky Collection.

For The Oamaruvian, Head Distiller and Master Blender Michael Byars, himself a trained winemaker, selects former red wine casks for the single malt’s further maturation. The warehouse stands on the coast of Oamaru. The company has also resumed distilling in Dunedin: a new distillery was established at Speight’s Brewery in 2020, and its copper stills produced their first new spirit in 2021. This new production complements the preserved historic stocks.
