Special Features:

Starward Peated Finish combines maturation in Australian red wine casks with an 18-month finish in casks that previously held peated Islay whisky. For this edition, Starward chose a lighter whisky than it had used for its predecessor, UnExpeated, and checked its development every few months during the finish. Distilled in 2017, the single malt was bottled in 2022 at 48%.

The fruitiness characteristic of Starward remains clearly discernible despite the extended time in the smoky casks. Tropical and red fruits, yellow peach and mocha sit alongside toasted oak and sweet peat. The smoke also recalls the earthy, coastal character of the Islay casks without obscuring the fruit.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Bright tropical fruits and toasted oak appear first, followed by a hint of sweet peat.
• Palate: Ripe red fruits and yellow peach mingle with mocha and subtle peat smoke.
• Finish: Oak gradually dries the palate, and the peaty finish lingers for a very long time.

Distillery/Bottler:

David Vitale founded Starward to create a distinctive Australian whisky. The distillery operates in Port Melbourne and sources its grain and red wine casks from within a day's drive. Melbourne's frequent temperature changes cause the casks to expand and contract, encouraging interaction between whisky and wood. New World Whisky Distillery Pty Ltd is the company behind the brand. Starward made the whisky for this edition, finished it in former Islay whisky casks and bottled it itself.
