An extended Madeira finish shapes this Teaninich from Murray McDavid's Benchmark series. Following maturation in Bourbon Hogsheads, the Single Malt spent its final three and a half years in first-fill Madeira barriques from Justino's. These casks previously held Madeira wine and come from the bottler's partner producer on the Portuguese island of Madeira. This finishing period brings together the honey-sweet, malty character with dried fruit and floral accents.

The whisky was distilled in 2012 and bottled in 2022 at nine years old. Casks 720993, 720994, 720996 and 720997 were selected for this edition, which comprises 1,546 bottles. This non-smoky Single Malt is neither chill-filtered nor coloured. It is offered at 46% in a 0.7-litre bottle with gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, malt and honeyed sweetness combine with fresh apple and gentle nutty notes.
• Palate: The palate reveals dried fruit and floral notes, complemented by a hint of butterscotch.
• Finish: A sweet cereal note remains on the finish, accompanied by lingering baking spices.

Distillery/Bottler:

Teaninich is located in Alness, north of Inverness, and was founded in 1817. This makes the Highland distillery one of Scotland's early Single Malt producers; today, it ranks among the large malt distilleries. Teaninich produced the whisky for this edition, while independent bottler Murray McDavid took responsibility for its further cask maturation and selection for bottling.

Murray McDavid was founded in 1994 by London wine merchants Mark Reynier and Simon Coughlin, together with Gordon Wright of Springbank. Their experience with wine informed the selection of unusual maturation casks. The company is based at Coleburn Distillery in Speyside. There, the Whisky Creations Team assesses the whiskies in storage, selects suitable casks for further maturation and monitors their development. To support this work, Murray McDavid collaborates directly with wine and spirits producers and sources freshly emptied casks. The Benchmark series consists of limited Single Malt releases in small batches.
