Hyde No.11 gets its smoky character from peated Irish barley malt. This triple-distilled single malt matures for eight years in ex-bourbon casks. Hyde uses charred white oak casks on their first fill for whiskey maturation.

Introduced in 2021, this limited edition bears the year 1949 in memory of the death of Douglas Hyde, Ireland’s first president. The release comprises 5,000 bottles. The whiskey is bottled at 43%, without chill filtration or added colouring.

Alongside its combination of fruity sweetness and smoke, the whiskey also has an earthy accent.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Smoke leads on the nose, accompanied by pear and apple. Subtle dried-fruit notes emerge afterwards.
• Palate: On the palate, sweetness and smoke meet honey, pear and toasted oak. A malty flavour reminiscent of sponge cake then emerges.
• Finish: The finish is full-bodied and rich, with a creamy texture and peaty character.

Distillery/Bottler:

Hyde continues the Irish tradition of whiskey bonding: the company selects whiskeys from Irish distilleries and oversees their maturation and finishing in specially sourced casks. These casks come directly from distilleries and bodegas in various countries. The focus is on selecting the wood and matching it to each whiskey.

Conor and Alan Hyde are behind the brand through Hibernia Distillers, founded in 2014. The family’s history is linked to a pub at Tinkers Cross outside Bandon in West Cork, behind which whiskey was stored in casks. Hyde whiskeys still mature in County Cork today, a location characterised by its mild, Atlantic-influenced climate.
