Natterjack Cask Strength Blend No. 1 combines Irish triple distillation with a corn-led grain recipe and a finish in new American oak. The blend consists of 20% malted barley and 80% corn. The whiskeys are placed together in ex-bourbon casks for maturation, then finished in heavily charred American oak with a Char 4 rating. This edition was bottled at cask strength in 2023 at 63%.

Orange, caramel sweetness and pronounced charred oak notes shape its character. Malt, muscovado sugar and a delicate clove spiciness add to this combination, while the finish offers warm, honey-like sweetness.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, orange and buttery toffee meet pronounced toasted notes from the charred oak. A delicate clove note complements the sweetness.
• Palate: The whiskey feels smooth yet powerful on the palate. Orange and charred oak take the lead, with malt, muscovado sugar and a hint of clove behind them. The oak also contributes an earthy note.
• Finish: The finish is warming, with honey-like sweetness.

Distillery/Bottler:

Natterjack is the brand of Dublin-based Gortinore Distillery Limited. Founder Aidan Mehigan launched it in 2019. During a bourbon distilling course in Kentucky, he met Jordan Via, who was then Master Distiller at Breckenridge. Mehigan subsequently gained practical experience there. Their collaboration led to an approach that combines Irish whiskey tradition with American-influenced grain recipes and maturation methods.

The whiskey is produced at Great Northern Distillery in Dundalk. Jordan Via developed the desired grain recipe with the distillery and is responsible for Natterjack's blends. He receives samples during maturation and travels to Ireland for their joint blending sessions. The brand takes its name from the natterjack toad, which is native to Ireland and also appears on the label.
