The Japanese edition was the first Explorers Series release that Teeling offered beyond travel retail. After eleven years in ex-bourbon casks, the whiskey spent four years in casks that had previously held Mugi Shochu, a Japanese barley spirit.

This fifteen-year-old blended Irish whiskey is made from maize and malted barley. The long Mugi Shochu finish shifts the sweetness of its ex-bourbon maturation towards tropical fruit, jasmine tea, spiced pastries and fine wood tannins. Limited to 18,000 bottles, it was bottled at 46% without chill filtration or added colouring.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, candied apple, lychee and jasmine tea mingle with vanilla sweetness, fruit pastries and spices.
• Palate: On the palate, lychee and passion fruit meet poached pear, ginger pastries and golden syrup.
• Finish: The finish is sweet and gentle, with soft wood tannins and dried fruit; it turns fresh at the end.

Distillery/Bottler:

Jack Teeling founded the Teeling Whiskey Company in 2012 and runs it with his brother Stephen. Their family’s Dublin whiskey history reaches back to 1782, when Walter Teeling operated a distillery on Marrowbone Lane. In 2015, the brothers opened Dublin’s first new whiskey distillery in more than 125 years in the Liberties district. Unusual grain recipes and cask maturation are central to the company’s work. For the Explorers Series, Teeling selects cask types associated with different countries; the Japanese edition is an official Teeling bottling.
