Special Features:

The Midnight Silkie brings together five triple-distilled single malts in a smoke-led Irish whiskey. Unlike the two preceding Silkie core releases, it contains no grain whiskey. Introduced in December 2021 as the third permanent expression in the range, it combines different cask maturations with a 35% share of peated malt.

The peated component matured in bourbon casks. It is joined by 30% single malt matured in sherry casks and subsequently finished in virgin oak, 20% from imperial stout casks, 5% from Oloroso casks and 10% from red wine casks. Different wine and beer cask influences thus meet the character of fresh oak. The whiskey is bottled at 46%, with natural colour and without chill filtration.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, muscovado sugar and chocolate orange mingle with pipe smoke, sweet tobacco and Christmas spices. Sandalwood, orange peel, baked apples and linseed add to the rounded, earthy aroma.
• Palate: The palate opens sweet and warm, with dark sugar syrup and dry peat smoke. Toffee apples, oak, tobacco and leather follow. Cinnamon and cloves add further spice. Blood orange, sweet grapefruit and a hint of pine bring freshness.
• Finish: The sweetness fades on the finish. Dried fruit and peat leave a comforting warmth, accompanied by sweet, earthy smoke.

Distillery/Bottler:

Silkie is the work of Sliabh Liag Distillers in County Donegal, Ireland. James and Moira combined their family roots and enthusiasm for the coast with a plan to revive the local distilling tradition. While establishing its whiskey distillery, the company developed the Silkie range using sourced whiskeys. Selecting and blending different spirits therefore forms a distinct part of its work.

The smoky Silkie expressions draw on the smoky whiskeys once widespread in Donegal. The brand takes its name from coastal legends about Silkies: seal-like beings that shed their skins on land and take human form.
