Distilled in 2022, this Smokey Monk is made from beechwood-smoked malt. The smoke therefore originates in the malt itself and has a distinctly savoury character, with hints of smoked foods and bacon. The single malt then matures for three years in heavily toasted American white oak casks.
Schraml bottles the whisky at 40% without added colouring. In the glass, it displays a pale, reflective reddish-gold hue. Smokey Monk received a silver medal at the 2025 German Whisky Award.
Tasting Notes:
Nose: Distinctive smoke takes centre stage on the nose. Roasted aromas are joined by savoury impressions of smoked ham and seasoned bacon.
Palate: On the palate, dense smoke and restrained malt sweetness combine with a mild, velvety-creamy texture.
Finish: The finish is piquant, spicy and balanced. Ripe fig and melting caramel provide a rounded conclusion.
Distillery/Bottler:
Stonewood is the whisky brand of the family-run Schraml distillery in Erbendorf, near the Steinwald Nature Park. Johann Baptist Schraml established a grain distillery there in 1818, laying the foundations for a distilling tradition now continued by the sixth generation. The Stonewood brand name refers directly to its home in the Steinwald region.
The distillery operates in the Alte Propstei Erbendorf, which was founded as a Benedictine hospice in 1150 and later served as a rectory. Schraml carries out every stage itself, from selecting the raw materials and fermentation to distillation and bottling; Stonewood whiskies undergo multiple distillations.
