Ondjaba The Namibian Whiskey - Gravino Cask Finish

Special features: This whiskey is an authentic creation from Namibia, produced by the Erongo Mountain Winery at over 1,200 meters above sea level. The special aspect: The grain is smoked over elephant dung, giving the whiskey a distinctive, sweet, and slightly cigar-like aroma. The finishing in Gravino casks – barrels that were previously filled with the house's port wine-like liqueur – imparts a complex fruity note and a harmonious spiciness to the whiskey.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: Smoky notes with sweet, cigar-like spice and hints of ripe fruits
  • Palate: Full-bodied, with a fine balance of spicy smokiness and sweet-fruity tones
  • Finish: Long-lasting, warm, with a subtle fruit sweetness and spicy nuances

Distillery/Bottler: The Erongo Mountain Winery, operated by Wolfgang and Esther Koll, is Namibia's first whiskey distillery. This German couple combines local ingredients and traditional production methods to create a whiskey that possesses a distinct African identity, far removed from Scottish and Irish models. The use of Mahangu, a type of millet cultivated in Namibia for thousands of years, as well as the innovative smoking over elephant dung, makes Ondjaba a unique product.
