Ron Abuelo Añejo 7 Años Reserva Superior belongs to the classic range of the Panamanian family company Varela Hermanos. The rum matures for at least seven years in former bourbon casks made from American white oak. This distinguishes its maturation from the additional cask treatments used for the Finish Collection and the Two Oaks range.

The seven-year-old bottling was introduced in 2005. It combines a full-bodied, sweet opening with a dry finish and is suitable both for drinking neat and for cocktails. The rum is offered at 40% alcohol in a 0.7-litre bottle without gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, resinous wood notes meet buttery caramel, accompanied by toffee, banana and cinnamon.
• Palate: The rum initially tastes sweet on the palate. Dried fruit and nuts combine with toffee and orange peel, while leather, tobacco and cinnamon spice add to the flavour.
• Finish: The long finish is dry and woody. Smoky notes, dried fruit and toffee linger.

Distillery/Bottler:

Varela Hermanos has its roots in Pesé, in Panama’s Herrera province. It was there that José Varela Blanco, originally from Galicia, founded the Ingenio San Isidro sugar mill in 1908. At his children’s suggestion, he began distilling sugarcane alcohol in 1936. Ron Abuelo followed later: the brand was first produced in 1960.

The company continues to produce in Pesé and is run by the third generation of the Varela family. Growing its own sugarcane and processing it through milling, fermentation and distillation connects its agricultural roots with spirits production. For the classic Ron Abuelo range, the company uses former bourbon casks made from American white oak; the more recent speciality ranges extend this cask work through additional maturation and specially prepared casks.
