Ron Abuelo Añejo Reserva Especial is a Spanish-style Panamanian rum distilled from fermented sugarcane honey and matured in former bourbon casks made from American white oak. The master blender combines selected aged rums for this bottling. The small oak casks are stored in Panama’s tropical climate. The rum carries no age statement and is bottled at 40%.

The silky texture brings together buttery caramel sweetness, fruit and spice. Chocolate pralines and overripe banana meet spicy tobacco, while toffee and white pepper shape the finish.

Tasting Notes:

Distillery/Bottler:

Varela Hermanos traces its origins to Don José Varela Blanco, who arrived in Panama in 1893 and settled shortly afterwards in Pesé, in the province of Herrera. There he founded the Ingenio San Isidro sugar mill in 1908. At his sons’ suggestion, he began distilling sugarcane alcohol for spirits production in 1936. Ron Abuelo was first produced in 1960.

Hacienda San Isidro is the Varela family’s ancestral home and the production site for Ron Abuelo. The family business thus connects its roots in sugarcane processing with the production of its own rum brand. Visitors to the hacienda can discover how the spirits are made.
