Akashi Meïsei combines 45% malt whisky with 55% grain whisky and matures in American white oak casks. This limited-edition release from Eigashima has a pronounced oak and vanilla character, complemented by sweetness and spice. The whisky is bottled at 40% in a 0.5-litre bottle and comes with gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, oak and vanilla sit alongside distinct malt notes. Lemon, cedarwood, yellow fruits that are not overripe and melon add to the aroma. Vanilla sugar and delicate blossom honey lend a light sweetness.
• Palate: On the palate, the whisky is full and sweet, yet soft, fresh and light. Ginger, a light vanilla note and subtle woody spices shape the flavour.
• Finish: The finish remains elegant and wood-led. It is drier and slightly more bitter than the palate, with a hint of bitter almond, a distant lemon note and light saltiness.

Distillery/Bottler:

Eigashima Shuzo has operated in Akashi since 1888, producing sake, shōchū and whisky. It is located on the Seto Inland Sea in Hyogo Prefecture. In 1919, the company became the first Japanese producer to receive a licence to distil whisky. The present whisky distillery, formerly known as White Oak, was built in 1984 following a Scottish model. It produces small quantities, with many production steps carried out by the same local craftspeople who also make traditional Japanese spirits.

For fermentation, Eigashima uses a Shubo approach inspired by sake production, which speeds up the start of fermentation and encourages the development of complex aromas.
