Special Features:

Antica Formula combines an Italian wine base with a blend of herbs and spices whose history dates back to Turin in 1786. Its ingredients include vanilla pods from Madagascar, Papua New Guinea and Tahiti, saffron mainly from the Iranian highlands, and wormwood from the Piedmontese Alps. Extracting and refining the herbal extracts can take several months. Vanilla, fruity sweetness and bitter citrus notes shape the character of this red vermouth.

The design of the blown-glass bottle draws on historical Carpano bottles, while the label takes its inspiration from the 1786 original. Each bottle is individually numbered, and Antica Formula is produced in batches of around 25,000 bottles. This version contains 1 litre at 16.5% alcohol and is offered without gift packaging.

Served over ice with a slice of orange, Antica Formula can be enjoyed as an aperitif or after a meal. It lends its vanilla, spicy and bittersweet character to classics such as the Negroni, Americano, Manhattan and Hanky Panky.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The vermouth first reveals a pronounced vanilla aroma. Spicy, citrus and nutty impressions then emerge, including cloves, raisins and almonds. Dried plums, dates, candied cherries, tobacco leaf and orange zest also feature on the nose.
• Palate: On the palate, it is soft and sweet, with a rich body. Vanilla combines with spices, while bitter orange, dates, cocoa beans, cherries and saffron add to the flavour. There are also bittersweet impressions and a very slightly syrupy texture. Dried plums, dates and raisins, together with Christmas spices, evoke an alcohol-soaked fruitcake.
• Finish: Cinnamon spice emerges in the fruity finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Antonio Benedetto Carpano developed his vermouth recipe in a small Turin wine shop in 1786. His knowledge of herbs informed the combination of wormwood, other herbs and spices. His nephew Giuseppe Bernardino Carpano founded the Fabbrica di Liquori e Vermut in 1820, laying the groundwork for production beyond the original wine shop.

Today, Fratelli Branca Distillerie produces Antica Formula and safeguards the secret recipe, which is known to only three people. The history of this Milanese family business began in 1845 with Bernardino Branca and Fernet-Branca. Its Milan production site has been located on Via Resegone since 1907. The Centro Studi Maria Branca, established in 1981, also provides the company with its own facility for quality control and research.
