For The Ardphroaig Mutant on Guard, Ardmore whisky matured for eleven years in a second-fill Laphroaig barrel. Single cask 807592/2013 yielded 242 bottles at 55.6% ABV. Brave New Spirits released the whisky in its The WhiskyHeroes series exclusively for Germany. It is non-chill-filtered and contains no added colouring.

Ardmore's peat smoke tends towards a dry, earthy character: the peat used in Aberdeenshire contributes fewer iodine notes than maritime peat. Against this Highland character, the whisky's iodine and salty impressions stand out. Lemon and damp moss accompany the smoke, while malty sweetness balances the phenolic notes on the palate. Ash and pepper carry through the long, dry finish.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, smoke and fresh lemon mingle with damp moss and malt, while a trace of iodine adds a maritime accent. Vanilla and caramel round out the aroma.
• Palate: On the palate, dry smoke and citrus meet soft malty sweetness, salted porridge and a little ash. Smoked wood and spice give the full-bodied flavour a savoury edge.
• Finish: The finish is long, dry and warming, leaving ash, delicate pepper and a medicinal, smoky aftertaste.

Distillery/Bottler:

Ardmore Distillery is near Kennethmont in Aberdeenshire. Adam Teacher had it built in the late 19th century to secure malt whisky for Teacher's Highland Cream; the distillery began operating in 1898. Its position beside the railway made it easier to transport materials from Glasgow at the time. Peated Ardmore malt remains a defining component of the blend.

Brave New Spirits is an independent bottler based in Glasgow. For its The WhiskyHeroes series, it selects single casks and small batches of Scotch whisky. The label of The Ardphroaig Mutant on Guard has a comic-book design. This whisky was distilled by Ardmore and matured in a second-fill Laphroaig barrel before Brave New Spirits released it as a limited WhiskyHeroes edition.
