Special Features:

Almost half a century of maturation has shaped this Bas-Armagnac from Château Garreau. Asta Morris selected it for Asta Maurice, its range of French spirits. Distilled in 1975 and bottled in 2022 at 46 years old, it comes from single cask AMF007. The release comprises 280 numbered bottles.

The Armagnac is bottled at its cask strength of 49.2%, without colouring or chill filtration. The bottle contains 0.7 litres. In the glass, it has a deep golden colour.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Pronounced honey aromas appear first, followed by raisins, peonies, broom flowers and pollen. A little chicory coffee and rose then emerge. Savoury impressions of meat, bone marrow, broth, lentils and ham round out the bouquet.
• Palate: Oak, pine-like notes, earth and spices are pronounced on the palate. There is also a soapy note, yet these different impressions come together harmoniously.
• Finish: The medium-length finish is distinctly tart, almost vinegary, and recalls brine. A note of honey wine remains in the aftertaste.

Distillery/Bottler:

Château Garreau lies near Labastide d'Armagnac in Bas-Armagnac. Also known as Domaine de Gayrosse, the estate covers 82 hectares on the border between Landes and Gers. Armagnac was already being made there in the 17th century; Charles Garreau acquired the estate in 1919. The family has continued this work over several generations. The estate includes an underground maturation cellar and historic stills dating from 1919 and 1932. Its Ecomusée explores Armagnac production and the surrounding natural environment.

Belgian independent bottler Asta Morris is behind the cask selection. Its founder, Bert Bruyneel, co-founded the Wee Dram Whisky Society in 1999 and established his company in 2009. He initially wrote specialist articles and led tastings, before releasing a 1977 Glenlivet as his first bottling in 2010. He later expanded the range to include other spirits. Under the Asta Maurice name, he releases French spirits such as Armagnac, Cognac and Calvados.
