Special Features:

The port wine cask finish adds another dimension to the fruity character of this Lochranza single malt. After around eight years in traditional oak casks, the whisky matures further in casks selected from a Portuguese port producer. The distillery manages this final stage so that the port influence does not overwhelm the spirit’s underlying character.

Red berries, ripe stone fruit, gentle spice and sweet oak shape the interplay between fruit and cask. The whisky is bottled at 50% ABV without chill filtration or added colouring. It belongs to Arran’s range of wine finishes, which also includes Sauternes- and Amarone-finished releases.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, vanilla spice and ripe citrus mingle with dried fruit and nuts.
• Palate: On the palate, fruit and spice meet, with cinnamon alongside baked apple and a hint of strawberry jam.
• Finish: A sweet barley note lingers on the finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Lochranza Distillery stands in the north of the Isle of Arran. Its water comes from Loch na Davie and reaches the distillery via the Easan Biorach burn. Isle of Arran Distillers operates Lochranza and bottles this single malt itself.

The wort produced during mashing ferments with yeast in wooden washbacks. The fermented liquid is then distilled twice in copper pot stills. Slow distillation and a relatively early cut of the heart help create the spirit’s bright, fruity style. This approach explains why the distillery seeks a balance between cask influence and spirit character during the port wine finish.
