Special Features:

Batch 17 comes from a single refill sherry butt filled in November 1996. After 26 years of maturation, That Boutique-y Whisky Company bottled the Ben Nevis at 47.8%, yielding 553 bottles. The whisky is not chill-filtered and contains no added colouring.

Waxy and oily notes sit alongside mango and passion fruit. Chalk, flint, citrus and pepper provide mineral and spicy counterpoints to the fruit. The bottling belongs to the “End of the World” series; its illustrated label depicts a supervolcano.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Chalk and flint appear first on the nose, followed by sunflower oil and candle wax. Mango and gooseberry cream then emerge. Ripe cherries, pomegranate and orange are also present, with a hint of oats.
• Palate: The waxy impression continues on the palate. Passion fruit, papaya and overripe mango meet cherries, crisp apples, oak spice and sweet sultanas.
• Finish: The long, fruity finish brings dark fruit, oak spice and a little pepper.

Distillery/Bottler:

Ben Nevis Distillery stands at the foot of the mountain of the same name in the Highlands. “Long John” McDonald founded it in 1825. Following several interruptions to production, Nikka Whisky acquired the distillery in 1989, and operations resumed in 1990. In the years that followed, it produced both whisky for Ben Nevis Single Malt and new make spirit for Japan.

That Boutique-y Whisky Company is an independent bottler that has released limited-edition whiskies with illustrated labels since 2012. It selected this Ben Nevis as one of the mature single malts in its “End of the World” series.
