Special Features:

The Original Ten combines whisky matured for at least ten years in bourbon, sherry and new oak casks before the different portions are married. The 0.05-litre miniature contains the same 43% ABV bottling as the full-size bottle.

The three cask types contribute throughout maturation rather than serving merely as a final finish. Bourbon casks bring vanilla and orchard fruit, while new oak adds toasted spice. Pear and nectarine meet honeyed malt, almond and vanilla cream; despite its fruit-led character, the whisky has a faint trace of smoke.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose offers ripe orchard fruit, honey and toasted oak.
• Palate: Ripe pear and nectarine mingle with sweet malt on the palate, which has a creamy texture.
• Finish: The medium-length finish brings together almond and spiced vanilla with hazelnut, a little chocolate and a faint trace of smoke.

Distillery/Bottler:

Benriach is in northern Speyside. The distillery uses four water additions during mashing rather than the usual three, and distils slowly to produce a fruit-led spirit. Master Blender Dr. Rachel Barrie selects the components for its bottlings from a varied cask stock; The Original Ten brings together bourbon, sherry and new oak casks.

John Duff founded Benriach in 1898. After the distillery closed in 1900, its floor maltings remained in operation until distillation resumed in 1965. The first single malt marketed as Benriach appeared in 1994 as a ten-year-old bottling. The Original Ten draws on that early style. Brown-Forman acquired Benriach in 2016, and today’s core range was created in 2020 under Rachel Barrie’s direction.
