Special Features:

A Pomerol finish brings together the robust Benrinnes style and the influence of a red wine cask. This Single Malt dates from 2011 and was bottled by Berry Bros. & Rudd after 15 years of maturation. The Hogshead bears cask number 303719; Spirits Curator Felix Dear selected the whisky to celebrate Kirsch’s 50th anniversary and The Nectar’s 20th anniversary.

The release comprises 256 bottles, each containing 0.7 litres at 54.6% alcohol. The whisky is not chill-filtered and contains no added colouring. Its dark fruit is accompanied by a savoury depth reminiscent of meat and cedarwood. This gives the wine cask influence a distinctly individual distillery character as its counterpart.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: The nose offers a dense abundance of fruit, with blackcurrant jam, sour cherries and stewed plums. Roasted grain adds to the aroma, while walnut oil and cloves provide subtle accents.
  • Palate: On the palate, juicy red berries and plum skin combine with gentle grape tannins. Dark chocolate and walnut oil accompany the fruit, while a hint of clove adds spicy accents.
  • Finish: Blackcurrants and a subtle savoury spiciness linger in the long finish. The finish is gently drying.

Distillery/Bottler:

Benrinnes stands on the lower slopes of the mountain of the same name in Speyside. The first distillery was founded in 1826 and destroyed by a flood in 1829; its successor was built at a different site. Since 2007, Benrinnes has used double distillation rather than its former partial triple-distillation process. The vapours are condensed in worm tubs, where copper coils sit in cold water. This cooling method contributes to the spirit’s heavy, savoury style.

Berry Bros. & Rudd is the independent bottler of this whisky. Founded in 1698, the family-owned wine and spirits merchant remains based at No.3 St James’s Street in London. For its single-cask releases, it selects individual casks and avoids chill filtration and artificial colouring. Felix Dear was responsible for selecting this Benrinnes.
