A finish in Bordeaux wine barriques gives this 14-year-old Bowmore a fruity counterpoint to its smoky, maritime character. The single malt previously matured in American ex-bourbon casks. It belongs to Bowmore’s Global Travel Exclusives collection.

Cherries and red berries linger into the finish. Salt and dry spice contrast with the fruit before bitter dark chocolate emerges. The bottle holds 0.7 litres, has an alcohol strength of 43% and comes in gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, Black Forest gateau and ripe cherries meet pine nuts and sea salt. Peppery smoke, dry earthiness, blackberries, lilies and dried grapes follow.
• Palate: On the palate, the whisky is salty, dry and spicy; a rich fruitiness with cherries, red apple and red fruit gummies then emerges. Its texture is smooth. Pepper, sea salt and a hint of campfire smoke accompany the fruit.
• Finish: In the finish, raspberries, cherries and strawberries give way to bitter dark chocolate.

Distillery/Bottler:

Bowmore Distillery stands beside Loch Indaal on Islay and was first documented in 1779. It still operates its own malting floors, where the barley is regularly turned by hand. Bowmore then uses peat when kilning the malt. This production background explains the distillery’s smoky character; maturation in ex-bourbon casks and the Bordeaux finish are the separate cask choices for this bottling.
