Bowmore has been distilling whisky on the shores of Loch Indaal since 1779 and is Islay's oldest distillery. It still operates its own malting floors, where the barley is regularly turned by hand during malting. Peat smoke also reaches the malt during the subsequent kilning.
Fermentation takes place in six Oregon pine washbacks. The distillery operates four stills, and the heart of the distillate is selected for filling into casks.
