Special Features:
Bruichladdich Black Art Edition 10.1 continues the enigmatic series with an Islay single malt distilled in 1993 and matured for 29 years. The tenth edition was bottled in 2022 at 45.1% ABV and is unpeated, naturally coloured and non-chill-filtered.
The whisky matured on Islay for almost three decades in casks dating from before the distillery reopened. Adam Hannett has deliberately kept secret which barley and cask types he selected for the final recipe.
Toasted oak, cedarwood and leather provide a dark frame for the mature fruit. Apricot, melon and cherry develop through marzipan, ginger biscuits, chocolate, vanilla and cinnamon towards a gentle finale of caramel, berries and tobacco.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: The nose is warm and inviting: toasted oak, chocolate, cedarwood and leather combine with cinnamon and clove, apricot jam, ripe melon, cherries and blackcurrant. Fresh citrus, gooseberries dipped in honey, geranium and honeysuckle add brighter accents, while iodine and further leather provide a more austere counterpoint.
- Palate: The whisky is soft, velvety and deep on the palate. Orange barley sugar, ginger-and-nut biscuits and lemon meringue pie are followed by stewed apricots and nutty marzipan. Toasted oak brings out chocolate and vanilla; fruit in syrup, raisins, plums and melon, followed later by iodine, coconut, ginger and cinnamon, broaden the aromatic spectrum.
- Finish: The finish is exceptionally smooth; sweet fudge, ripe berries and delicate tobacco fade with a final hint of ginger.
Distillery/Bottler:
Bruichladdich distilled the whisky for Edition 10.1 on Islay, where it matured for almost three decades before the distillery bottled it in 2022. Head Distiller Adam Hannett selected old stocks from the period before the distillery reopened and deliberately kept the cask recipe secret.
Founded on the shores of Loch Indaal in 1881, the distillery still works with much of its Victorian equipment. Within the distillery's range, Bruichladdich represents the unpeated style. As maturation and bottling also take place on Islay, production, cask selection and completion of this edition are all concentrated on the island.
