The 15-year-old unpeated Islay single malt An Cuan Garbh No. 1 is the first release in the second chapter of the Westering Home Collection and appeared for Fèis Ìle 2026. After its primary maturation, the whisky was finished in White Port casks from Portugal’s Douro Valley and bottled at 51.6%.

An Cuan Garbh means “the rough sea” in Scottish Gaelic. The theme recalls Bunnahabhain’s remote location on the Sound of Islay and the fact that the distillery could only be reached by sea until 1960. The cask finish brings together orchard fruit, peach and apricot with candied citrus, honeyed almonds, toasted malt and ginger. The whisky retains its natural colour and was not chill filtered.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals honeysuckle and elderflower, followed by orchard fruit, candied citrus peel and warm honeyed sweetness.
• Palate: On the palate, juicy peach and apricot mingle with candied lemon peel, honeyed almonds, toasted malt and delicate ginger spice.
• Finish: The finish lingers with nutty warmth and sweet candied fruit.

Distillery/Bottler:

An Cuan Garbh No. 1 is an official Bunnahabhain bottling. William Robertson, together with William and James Greenlees, founded the distillery in 1881 on Islay’s remote north-east coast. The settlement of Bunnahabhain grew alongside it, and production began in 1883. Until 1960, the site on the Sound of Islay was accessible only by sea. This history provides the background for the journey motif of the An Cuan Garbh chapter.

Bunnahabhain is known for unpeated Islay single malt. Its tall, pear-shaped stills have unusually long necks that hold back heavier flavour compounds, encouraging a lighter and more refined spirit. In An Cuan Garbh No. 1, the White Port finish complements this house style with bright fruit, honeyed sweetness, nutty notes and gentle spice.
