Blue Lake Lodge acquires its distinctive character through maturation in Tasmania's Central Highlands. The casks are stored outdoors at the lodge on Arthur's Lake, where they are directly exposed to the cool highland climate; the lake also provides the water for this single malt from Callington Mill.

The cask journey begins in small 30-litre sherry and port casks. The whisky then continues to mature in three larger casks: an ex-bourbon cask seasoned with Muscadelle, an ex-bourbon cask seasoned with rum and an Australian Tawny cask. Muscadelle, rum and Tawny therefore shape the whisky in succession through their respective casks.

The casks are used as first fills, with whisky added immediately after they have been emptied while they are still wet. Blue Lake Lodge is presented at natural colour, without chill filtration and at 46% alcohol in a 0.7-litre bottle.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Lively vanilla, white flowers and coconut lead on the nose. Sweet buttery caramel, a suggestion of spicy rum and a hint of maple syrup complete the aroma.
• Palate: The whisky is nutty and layered on the palate. Maple syrup, butterscotch and vanilla-accented oak combine with liquorice and berries, while a little brown sugar adds another sweet accent.
• Finish: The long, sweet finish reveals rich nougat and lingering oak.

Distillery/Bottler:

Callington Mill Distillery is located on the historic mill site in Oatlands, Tasmania. Founder John Ibrahim developed the idea for the distillery after meeting Bill Lark and travelling with him to Scotland in 2016, experiences that deepened his involvement in whisky production. An integrated distillery plant designed specifically for Tasmanian conditions was developed for the site in partnership with Kolmark.

Callington Mill carries out milling, mashing, fermentation, distillation and bottling in Oatlands and favours locally grown barley. The distillery produces Blue Lake Lodge and bottles it under its own brand.
