Caol Ila has distilled whisky since 1846 on Islay’s east coast, near Port Askaig, overlooking the Sound of Islay towards Jura. The distillery makes both peated and unpeated single malt. Murray McDavid selected Caol Ila’s smoky whisky for this bottling. That whisky has a lively character, and the spirit flows from tall copper stills.
Independent bottler Murray McDavid was founded in 1994 by wine merchants Mark Reynier and Simon Coughlin together with Gordon Wright of Springbank. Selecting a variety of casks, particularly former wine casks, has been part of its approach from the beginning. The company is now based at Coleburn Distillery in Speyside.
