This 40-year-old Caol Ila matured in a single cask that yielded 135 bottles for the Director's Special series. Elixir Distillers bottled the whisky at 49% alcohol, with no added colouring and without chill filtration. The bottling is presented in a solid wooden box.

Ripe peach and vibrant citrus fruit shape the whisky’s fruity character. Smoke and spice provide contrast, while black pepper, subtle nuttiness and a dry finish give the profile structure.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, vibrant citrus fruit and ripe peach meet subtle smoke and restrained spices.
• Palate: On the palate, rich fruit combines with distinctive black pepper and layered spice; the texture is balanced and mature.
• Finish: The finish is long and dry, with clear spice, subtle nuttiness and elegant smoke defining the aftertaste.

Distillery/Bottler:

Caol Ila was founded on Islay in 1846 and is located in the north-east of the island, beside the Sound of Islay. During the extensive reconstruction in the early 1970s, the six stills were recreated in their previous shapes to preserve the distillery’s character. The malt comes from Port Ellen, while the water is drawn from the Loch nam Ban spring, which rises over limestone.

Elixir Distillers is the independent bottler behind The Single Malts of Scotland. The range began with Sukhinder Singh’s first cask release in 2002. The bottling operation, previously known as Speciality Drinks, was renamed Elixir Distillers in 2017; for this Director's Special release, the company selected a single Caol Ila cask.
