Special Features:
Joseph Cartron uses flowers from Austria and Hungary for this elderflower liqueur. Their delicate floral aromas take centre stage, complemented by a pleasantly tart fruitiness. The liqueur is made in France and bottled at 20% alcohol in a bottle containing 0.7 litres. In the glass, it is clear with subtle yellow highlights.
The freshly picked flowers are steeped in alcohol, after which the liquid is drawn off. Granulated sugar is added and the mixture is heated so that water evaporates and the aromas become concentrated. Pure alcohol is then added, followed by a further slow addition of sugar. This multi-stage process combines the floral extract with the sweetness of the liqueur.
In cocktails, the floral character can be paired with citrus fruit or sparkling wine. Prosecco, sparkling water and fresh mint make suitable partners for a Hugo Spritz; a simple alternative is to combine it with tonic and lemon zest. A small splash can also flavour fruit desserts or fresh dairy products such as quark.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: The nose is both delicate and expressive. Subtle aromas of white flowers lead the aromatic profile. Elderflower is accompanied by pear skin and poached pear. A faint soapy note is also perceptible.
- Palate: The liqueur opens softly and roundly on the palate. It then feels clean and very fresh, while the sweetness remains restrained. Pear skin and cooked pear join the elderflower, with pronounced lemony acidity providing a distinct contrast.
- Finish: Delicate floral notes mingle with hints of tart fruit in the long-lasting finish. Poached pear accompanies the rich elderflower flavour, balanced by lingering acidity.
Distillery/Bottler:
Joseph Cartron founded his house in 1882 in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Burgundy. Its early liqueurs included Prunelle, Marasquin, Cacao and Kummel. Double Crème de Cassis in particular became a defining product of the house, rooting its history in Burgundy’s liqueur tradition.
The house’s expertise has been passed down through five generations. Its range includes fruit crèmes, liqueurs, fruit spirits, Marc and Fine de Bourgogne. For its fruit products, the house uses selected fruit from regional orchards and vineyards. For the elderflower liqueur, however, Joseph Cartron sources flowers from Austria and Hungary: ingredients are therefore selected to suit each product, rather than being limited to Burgundy.
