The original Clynelish distillery was founded in 1819 by the Marquess of Stafford and provided Highland tenants with a market for their barley. That site closed in 1968 after the modern distillery had been built across the road; the subsequent history of the old works is closely linked with Brora. Barley from the northern Highlands and water from the Clynemilton Burn now help shape the subtly waxy, coastal house style.
