This Convalmore is part of the third Recollection Series, through which Gordon & MacPhail presents single malts from distilleries that have closed or have long been silent. Distilled in 1984, the whisky matured for 39 years in a previously used sherry hogshead, No. 1733. It was bottled on 19 June 2024 at 51.1%, with an outturn of 108 bottles.

The Recollection Series pairs these rare single casks with illustrations by Bruno Mangyoku that evoke the history of each distillery. This bottling comes in a premium box; the whisky has no added colouring and is not chill-filtered.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, rich toffee made with dark sugar syrup and cinnamon mingles with a delicate waxy note. Stewed raisins and soft butterscotch round out the aroma.
• Palate: On the palate, clementine and stewed wild berries meet toasted hazelnuts. Brown sugar follows, with a delicate coffee-bean note and a hint of dried banana.
• Finish: The full-bodied finish fades with black pepper and grapefruit peel.

Distillery/Bottler:

Convalmore began production in Speyside in 1894. The distillery drew its water from the Conval Hills to the west, from which it took its name. After several changes of ownership, it closed in 1985; the site is now used for storage. Convalmore single malts reached the bottle only through independent bottlers.

Gordon & MacPhail was founded as a grocery business in Elgin in 1895 and became, among other things, a specialist in maturing single malts. The family company had its own casks filled with new-make spirit at Scottish distilleries, then stored the whisky either at the distilleries or in its warehouses in Elgin. In this bottling, the whisky comes from Convalmore; Gordon & MacPhail oversaw its cask maturation and bottling.
