Special Features:

European oak takes centre stage in Croithlí Quercus Robur. The single malt first matures in ex-bourbon casks before receiving a finish in new, previously unused oak casks. The wood comes from Slavonia in Croatia. Quercus Robur is the botanical name of the oak species used, which is also often used for sherry casks; this bottling, however, is finished in virgin oak. Compared with Quercus Petraea and Quercus Alba, Robur oak is more porous and considerably less sweet.

This bottling belongs to the Oak Cask Series, which explores different oak species. The series takes its inspiration from the distillery’s location: Coillín Darach means “little oak grove”. Robur combines pronounced fruit with spices and a powerful, dry finish. The whiskey is bottled at 46% without chill filtration.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals intense redcurrants and warming winter spices, including ginger, cloves and nutmeg.
• Palate: Rich fruit notes combine with pronounced spice on the palate.
• Finish: The powerful finish is dry, with suggestions of wood smoke and dark chocolate.

Distillery/Bottler:

Crolly Distillery lies in the Irish-speaking Gaeltacht area of County Donegal, between the Atlantic coast and the Derryveagh Mountains with their distinctive Errigal peak. Its building dates from 1901. For its own whiskey production, the distillery uses direct-fired pot stills from the Cognac region, refurbished for their new purpose. It distils twice, using local ingredients and water from Donegal. Under the Croithlí brand, the Oak Cask Series explores how different oak species influence the character of a single malt.
