Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin brings together Irish botanicals and Chinese green tea. Its name comes from Gunpowder tea, whose leaves are rolled into small pellets. The miniature contains 0.05 litres of the classic bottling at 43% alcohol.

The base spirit is made from grain. The twelve botanicals are processed in two ways. Juniper, coriander, angelica root, cardamom, orris root, caraway, star anise and meadowsweet are used in pot distillation. Lemon, grapefruit, makrut lime and Gunpowder tea release their aromas through vapour infusion in a botanical basket. This combination shapes the interplay of citrus, herbs and tea.

For a gin and tonic, the distillery recommends a generous wedge of red grapefruit. This garnish echoes the gin's citrus-led character.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Fresh lemon peel leads on the nose. Behind it lies a subtle, sage-like juniper aroma, accompanied by a hint of green tea and meadowsweet.
• Palate: Grapefruit dominates the palate. Herbal juniper and green tea reminiscent of jasmine tea join in on the mid-palate. Towards the end, the flavour becomes sweeter, with spicy and herbal notes: subtle anise and cardamom mingle with honey-like and vanilla-like nuances of meadowsweet.
• Finish: The finish is gently warming and leaves a pleasant warmth.

Distillery/Bottler:

The Shed Distillery is located in Drumshanbo in Ireland's County Leitrim. PJ Rigney founded the distillery to bring together impressions from his travels and Asian botanicals with native Irish plants. Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin is the principal gin creation to emerge from this approach.

The distillery uses copper pot stills and slowly distils the gin by hand. The subsequent bottling also remains in the hands of the distillery team: the bottles are filled, labelled and sealed by hand.
