Enigma Part 1 is the damp-dunnage counterpart in a warehouse comparison involving two 35-year-old anniversary casks. Distilled on 27 September 1989, the Edradour spirit matured entirely in first-fill Oloroso sherry butt no. 355. The cask remained in the distillery’s cool, damp dunnage warehouse throughout maturation.

Under these storage conditions, comparatively less liquid was lost than from the sister cask kept in drier surroundings, while the alcohol strength decreased more markedly. After 35 years, 498 bottles were filled at 52.6% on 2 July 2025. Dark chocolate, old oak, leather and honeyed sweetness form a harmonious whole.

This 0.7-litre bottling is natural in colour and non-chill-filtered. It is presented in a premium box.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose combines dark chocolate and rich dried fruit with raisins and dates, polished old oak, leather and Oloroso spice.
• Palate: The palate is full and complex: dark sugar syrup, figs, roasted nuts and espresso meet ripe fruit, sweet Oloroso, honeyed depth and velvety oak spice.
• Finish: The exceptionally long, warming finish reveals dark chocolate, dried fruit, fruitcake and cocoa alongside gentle spice and a subtle note of oak.

Distillery/Bottler:

Edradour was founded in 1825 as a cooperative of local farmers; the 2025 bottling therefore coincides with the distillery’s 200th anniversary. Edradour still operates traditional equipment on a small scale, including an open cast-iron mash tun, a Morton Refrigerator, two copper stills and water-cooled worm tubs.

Edradour Distillery Co. Ltd distils the single malt on the distillery premises and bottles it there; maturation also takes place on site. This anniversary whisky is an original bottling from the Edradour brand.
