Maturation in previously used sweet wine casks shapes El Ron Prohibido Habanero Solera 12. This Mexican blend brings together rums of different maturities using the solera method. A little raisin wine rounds out the blend and contributes to its sweet-and-tart character. The rum is bottled at 40% in a 0.7-litre bottle.

Dried fruit, nutty tones and sweet wood notes meet chocolate and coffee. The rum is dark brown with reddish highlights. Its handled bottle and narrative label design reflect the brand’s historical background.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose opens sweetly and intensely, with raisins, plums and other dried fruit. There are also notes of vanilla, wood and walnuts, alongside buttery hints, chocolate and coffee.
• Palate: Raisins and prunes lead on the palate. Chocolate and coffee complement the fruit, while walnut wood adds another accent.
• Finish: The finish is long and silky. Dried fruit lingers with vanilla, chocolate and coffee, accompanied by a hint of caramel.

Distillery/Bottler:

Ron Prohibido, S.A. de C.V. produces and bottles the rum in Mexico. The brand draws on the history of Chinguirito, a Mexican sugar-cane spirit that was banned during the Spanish colonial period. El Ron Prohibido accordingly means “the forbidden rum”.

The brand’s story includes Spanish trading ships that carried sweet wine to New Spain. For the return voyage, the emptied wine casks were filled with Chinguirito; during the journey, the spirit absorbed wood and wine aromas. The name Habanero refers to the stopover in Havana. Today’s maturation in former sweet wine casks echoes this historical theme.
