Japanese bitter orange peel shapes Etsu Double Orange, alongside juniper berries, coriander seeds, liquorice root and angelica root. The botanicals steep in alcohol for seven days and are removed before distillation. The distillery uses water from the Ōu Mountains for dilution. The gin is offered at 43% in a bottle containing 0.7 litres, without gift packaging.

Beyond fruity freshness, the botanicals contribute further dimensions: coriander adds some sweetness and a minty nuance, while juniper brings a piquant, peppery note. Liquorice contributes anise, wood and slight bitterness; angelica adds bitter notes and warmth. The gin is suitable for gin and tonic and cocktails. It won gold at the Global Gin Masters in 2022 and at the Spirits Masters Asia in 2021 and 2022.

Tasting Notes:

Distillery/Bottler:

Akita distillery is located in the north of the Japanese island of Honshū, near the Ōu Mountains. Alongside Double Orange, it also produces Etsu Double Yuzu and Etsu Sakura. The name Etsu means “pleasure” in Japanese.

The distillery uses alcohol made from sugar cane molasses for its gins. The botanicals macerate in this alcohol at 67% before being removed. The alcohol is then diluted to 30% and distilled once in a copper still, producing a distillate at 65%. Water from the Ōu Mountains brings the strength down to 43%. Before bottling, a fine-mesh filter removes impurities. The distillery does not use chill filtration.
