Special Features:
Havfruen combines Jamaican rum with refinement on the Danish island of Fanø. This takes place in two stages: first, the spirit rests with heather honey from Fanø, sea buckthorn and Madagascar vanilla. It is then finished in port wine casks. Both flavouring and cask maturation are therefore part of its production process.
The base is a rum distilled from molasses. Havfruen has an amber appearance and a sweet, fruity character with subtle spice. Alongside honey and vanilla, raspberry syrup and dark muscovado sugar emerge; notes of grapes and sweets round out the flavour profile.
Havfruen won a bronze medal in the Spiced Rum category at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in 2019. It is bottled at 41.5% alcohol and offered in a 0.7-litre bottle with gift packaging. Maritime map motifs and historical typography on the packaging evoke seafaring history. The spirit can be enjoyed neat, slightly chilled or over a large ice cube.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: On the nose, honey notes meet the tart fruitiness of sea buckthorn, accompanied by a delicate vanilla note.
- Palate: Havfruen is smooth and full-bodied on the palate. Raspberry syrup and dark muscovado sugar combine with subtle spice. Notes of grapes and sweets add to the balanced sweetness.
- Finish: Delicate fruitiness lingers on the finish, accompanied by subtle woody notes.
Distillery/Bottler:
Fanø Spirits is a family business on the Danish island of Fanø. Lars Jensen Schou launched Fanø Skibsrom in 2015, with Havfruen as its first bottling. His children also became involved in the business. The flavouring and maturation are carried out by hand. The base rum is distilled in Jamaica, while Fanø Spirits handles its subsequent refinement on Fanø.
The brand draws on the provisioning of historical sailing ships: rum was combined with fruit, spices and sweetening ingredients and stored in wooden casks. One particular inspiration was the Doris Brodersen, built in 1875, which transported rum and sugar from the Caribbean to Flensburg and belonged to Fanø's fleet from 1890 to 1908. Fanø Skibsrom carries this combination of rum, natural ingredients and cask maturation into its present-day production.
