Special Features:
This six-year-old Lowland single malt comes from three selected casks: 19/1534, 19/1535 and 19/1536. Distilled twice from unpeated malt in 2019, the whisky initially matured for five years in first-fill ex-bourbon casks. On 4 June 2024, it was transferred to Italian Amarone barriques for a further year and nine months. It was bottled at 53% on 16 March 2026, with a release of 1,060 bottles of 0.7 litres each.
The bottling is part of the Small Batch Series, in which the distillery combines different cask maturations with its three house styles. Amarone della Valpolicella is a dry red wine from the Valpolicella region in Veneto. During appassimento, the grapes are partially dried after harvest; the loss of water concentrates sugars, acids and aromas. This concentration makes barriques previously used for Amarone an interesting choice for whisky finishes. Their influence complements the fruity foundation of this unpeated house style with red fruits and floral notes. Rose, delicate sweetness, white pepper and gentle oak spice add further nuances.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: The nose reveals fresh, ripe strawberries and juicy cherries, underpinned by gentle toffee sweetness.
- Palate: The whisky is smooth and rich on the palate, with creamy vanilla joining vivid cherry, strawberry and a sweetness reminiscent of soft fruit gums and confectionery.
- Finish: The finish lingers gently and evenly: ripe strawberry and vanilla cream give way to dark chocolate and delicate earthy spice, leaving a warming aftertaste.
Distillery/Bottler:
The Glasgow Distillery Company Ltd is an independent distillery founded by two friends in 2012 with the aim of bringing spirits production back to Glasgow. It is located in the Hillington industrial estate on the outskirts of the city. Production has a craft-focused approach with little automation, and the team also includes an on-site cooper.
For Glasgow 1770, the distillery divides its production year among three house styles: unpeated and double distilled, peated and double distilled, and unpeated and triple distilled. Slow distillation promotes contact with the copper and shapes the sweet, fruity character of the unpeated, double-distilled spirit on which this Amarone bottling is based. The Small Batch Series uses these three styles for changing maturations and finishes.
