This eleven-year-old Speyside single malt from Murray McDavid's Benchmark range was initially matured for seven years in ex-bourbon oak, followed by four years in first-fill Oloroso sherry hogsheads. Distilled in 2014 and bottled in autumn 2025, the whisky came from casks 2100094 and 2100096, which yielded 715 bottles in total. It was bottled at 55.6% without chill filtration or added colouring.

Four of its eleven maturation years were spent in Oloroso oak, making the finish a distinct second phase of maturation rather than merely a brief final accent. Caramel apple and fruit crumble meet cocoa, sweet mocha, red fruit and spices.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose combines caramel apple, a creamy impression and fruit crumble. Dried fruit, spices and a hint of oak provide further accents.
• Palate: Cocoa, sweet mocha and juicy red fruit come to the fore on the palate. Dark chocolate, nuts and a light honeyed sweetness round out the flavour.
• Finish: The finish is long and warm, with caramel, poached pear and baking spices. Oak and a subtle spiciness linger.

Distillery/Bottler:

Glen Elgin is located near Fogwatt in Speyside. William Simpson and James Carle founded the distillery in 1898, while historical records identify Charles C. Doig as the architect of the original site. Clear wort, long fermentation, slow distillation and condensation in worm tubs help shape the distillery's richly fruity, weighty and complex character.

Murray McDavid was founded in 1994 by Mark Reynier, Simon Coughlin and Gordon Wright. The independent bottler soon made a name for itself through maturation in unusual casks, particularly wine casks. Murray McDavid is now owned by Aceo Ltd. and operates from Coleburn Distillery in Speyside. For this Glen Elgin, Murray McDavid was responsible for selecting the casks, carrying out the Oloroso finish and bottling the whisky as part of the Benchmark range.
