This 31-year-old Glen Garioch is part of The Single Malts of Scotland Director's Special series. Elixir Distillers selected the single cask and bottled the whisky at cask strength in 2023 at 57.3%. Limited to 130 bottles, it is neither chill-filtered nor coloured and comes in a 0.7-litre bottle.

The presentation underscores the special character of this edition: the whisky comes in a premium wooden box with an embossed metal plaque, while the engraved bottle has a wax seal.

The single malt combines aromas of vanilla ice cream, waffles and toasted pastries with fruity impressions. Candied ginger and dark chocolate deepen its creamy profile, while lemon and ginger biscuits linger in the finish.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, the whisky evokes an old-fashioned ice cream parlour, with homemade milk ice cream, a fruit sundae, jelly sweets, waffle cones, toasted tea cake and an ice-cream drink with ginger beer.
• Palate: The palate is creamy and pastry-led; cheesecake with a ginger-biscuit base brings together dark chocolate, candied ginger and Madagascar vanilla ice cream.
• Finish: Soft, crumbly lemon and ginger biscuits linger for a long time in the finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Glen Garioch Distillery is located in Oldmeldrum near Aberdeen and gives 1797 as its official founding year. It was established by the Manson brothers, who came from a farming family; the original operation on the edge of the historic market town also included a brewery.

Glen Garioch produced the Highland single malt, while Elixir Distillers selected the cask and bottled it under The Single Malts of Scotland. The story of this independent range began in 2002 with Sukhinder Singh's first single-cask bottling. Since then, Elixir Distillers has selected Scottish casks for their individual character and released the chosen whiskies as limited bottlings that are rarely, if ever, repeatable.
