Glendalough Double Barrel develops its character through two cask stages. The Irish single grain whiskey first matures in charred ex-bourbon barrels made from American oak, then finishes in slow-toasted Oloroso casks from Montilla, Spain. Glendalough selects the bodega, the wine previously held in the casks, the casks themselves and the cooper. The packaging was redesigned in 2024; the whiskey continues to be offered in 0.7-litre bottles at 42%.

Dark cherries, raisins and figs meet butterscotch, honey and brown sugar. Floral notes, lemongrass, citrus fruit and nutmeg complement the fruit. Pepper and ginger add spice, while a hint of almond and an earthy note accompany the finish.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals dark cherries, raisins and figs, along with a note reminiscent of English Christmas pudding. Floral impressions, lemongrass, citrus fruit and a little nutmeg follow.
• Palate: The whiskey is sweet and soft on the palate. Butterscotch and honey mingle with dried fruit, maraschino cherries and brown sugar, while peppercorns provide a spicy accent.
• Finish: Ginger spice, a hint of almond and an earthy note linger on the finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Barry Gallagher and Brian Fagan founded Glendalough in 2011 near the Wicklow Mountains. The company began with poitín and later expanded its range to include whiskey and gin. It uses American oak for the initial maturation stage and, depending on the whiskey, different woods and cask types for finishing. For Double Barrel, Glendalough chose Oloroso casks from Montilla. Mark Anthony Brands International acquired a stake in Glendalough in 2016 and took full ownership in 2019.
