This Glenlochy was distilled in 1979 and matured for 44 years in an American oak refill hogshead. Gordon & MacPhail bottled the whisky from cask 3312 on 19 June 2024 for the third Recollection Series within the Private Collection. Just 124 bottles were released, and the whisky was bottled at a cask strength of 53.2%. The series focuses, among other things, on stocks from closed Scottish distilleries. This single malt comes from Glenlochy’s final years of production before the distillery fell silent in 1983.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Orange oil opens the nose, followed by pressed apples and a hint of ginger. Dried mango adds a lively accent alongside honeycomb. A delicate note of beeswax polish emerges in the background.
• Palate: Pineapple and banana provide sweet tropical fruit on the palate, joined by lemon sherbet. The flavours develop from strawberry compote and vanilla fudge towards pecan notes.
• Finish: The finish is full and smooth, with roasted almonds and oak.

Distillery/Bottler:

Glenlochy was established in 1898 in Fort William in the western Highlands. David McAndie of Nairn founded the company that commissioned the distillery’s construction. Following lengthy interruptions to production and several changes of ownership, Glenlochy remained in operation until 1983. The site was sold in 1992, and much of the distillery was subsequently demolished.

Founded in 1895, the family-owned Elgin company Gordon & MacPhail kept the whisky from cask 3312 and bottled it independently. Over generations, the company arranged for its own casks to be filled with new-make spirit at Scottish distilleries. The whiskies then matured either at the distilleries or in Gordon & MacPhail’s bonded warehouses in Elgin. This long-term approach to cask management also makes it possible to release whiskies from distilleries that ceased production long ago.
