This 55-year-old Glenury Royal was distilled in 1970 and bottled in 2026 as part of Diageo's Rare Series. After maturing in American oak hogsheads, the whiskies were married in European oak puncheons. Limited to 232 bottles, the whisky was bottled at 62.4% in 0.7-litre bottles, with no added colour and without chill filtration.

Its fruit character combines dried apple and pear with gooseberry. Creamy sweetness, burnt toffee and ginger meet dry spice and delicate, wood-driven smoke.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose is restrained yet clear: dried apple and pear rest above delicate, wood-driven smoke.
• Palate: The palate begins creamy and gently sweet before distinct gooseberry emerges. Burnt toffee, dried fruit and spices follow, while a little water brings spicy ginger to the fore.
• Finish: The finish is long, drying and warmly spiced, leaving a delicate note of smoke behind.

Distillery/Bottler:

The Highland distillery Glenury Royal was founded in 1825 in Stonehaven on Scotland's east coast. The Royal suffix is attributed to the friendship between its then owner, Captain Barclay, and King William IV. DCL acquired the distillery in 1953 and doubled its capacity in the mid-1960s. Glenury Royal closed in 1985, and the distillery buildings were later demolished. The brand now belongs to Diageo, which released this 55-year-old whisky as an official Rare Series bottling.
