Special Features:
Ha'penny Four Cask brings together two types of whiskey and four different cask influences. The blend contains malt and grain whiskeys aged between four and ten years and carries no age statement. Its components are malt finished in Port Pipes, malt matured in first-fill Bourbon Barrels, grain matured in Sherry Butts and grain matured in double-charred Barrels. The whiskey is bottled at 43% without chill filtration, and its colour comes entirely from cask maturation.
Together, these cask components create a full-bodied, spicy blend with a broad range of fruit and nut notes. Alongside apricot and marzipan, the palate also reveals Demerara sugar and dark fruits. Vanilla and crème caramel are balanced by delicate orange notes.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: The nose is fresh and fruity, with tropical fruits, berries and vanilla. Delicate almond notes and nutty sweetness complement oak, cinnamon, fruitcake and cherry, while dried berries are also discernible.
- Palate: On the palate, the whiskey is dry yet rounded, with peppery wood spice. The sweetness of dried apricots gives way to marzipan, Demerara sugar and praline. Vanilla and crème caramel combine in balance with delicate orange notes and dark fruits.
- Finish: The finish reveals vanilla, crème caramel and the citrus character of orange. Spicy oak lingers.
Distillery/Bottler:
The team at Pearse Lyons Distillery developed the Ha'penny range as a tribute to Dublin's Ha'penny Bridge. The bridge connects the two sides of the city and gave the brand its name.
The family-run Pearse Lyons Distillery occupies the former St. James Church in Dublin's The Liberties neighbourhood. Pearse and Deirdre Lyons had the church building restored, and the distillery opened there in 2017. The family's connection to the site goes back further: Pearse's grandfather, John Hubert Lyons, is buried in the adjoining cemetery, and several generations of the family worked as coopers in Dublin.
Since 2020, the distillery has used grain from its farm, around 25 kilometres away, and an in-house yeast culture for its own distillation. Its maturation casks include previously used bourbon casks from its sister distillery, Town Branch Distillery in Lexington, Kentucky.
