The stout finish of Half 'n' Half brings together whisky maturation and the brewing craft of Spey Valley Brewery. Murray McDavid supplied the brewery with empty whisky casks, which were first used to mature stout. The blend then underwent further maturation in these beer-seasoned hogsheads. Half of the blend consists of single malts from four Speyside distilleries, while the other half is Highland single grain. Murray McDavid was founded in 1994 by London wine merchants Mark Reynier and Simon Coughlin, together with Gordon Wright of Springbank Distillery. Selecting unusual maturation casks, particularly former wine casks, became an early hallmark of the independent Scottish bottler. Crafted Blend focuses on combining single malt and single grain, with further cask maturation complementing the blending process.
In 2000, the team helped reopen the mothballed Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay, bringing in master distiller Jim McEwan.
