Entirely tropical maturation shapes this Hampden The Younger: distilled in 2018, the rum spent four years in ex-bourbon casks at the distillery in Jamaica. During that time, more than 28% of the original cask contents evaporated. In 2022, the rum was bottled at 47% in a 3-litre bottle supplied in gift packaging.

LROK stands for Light Rum Owen Kelly and identifies a style of rum Hampden has produced since 1952. The distillery distinguishes its so-called marks by defined production methods and ester ranges. LROK covers 200 to 400 grams of esters per hectolitre of pure alcohol. This bottling contains 370.1 grams of esters within a total of 1,697.9 grams of congeners per hectolitre of pure alcohol.

Hampden uses spring water and a particularly long fermentation with natural yeasts. Distillation then takes place exclusively in copper double retort pot stills: batch-operated stills with two retorts connected downstream. No sugar is added to the rum.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Very ripe tropical fruits, particularly jackfruit, define the nose. Candied vegetal notes join an impression of ripe sugar cane and beeswax. With air, juicy pineapple emerges. Orange peel, candied fruit and soft panettone with bitter almonds complete the picture.
• Palate: The opening has a slight acidity and recalls extremely ripe, partly fermented tropical fruit. The pastry notes become firmer on the palate, moving into lightly toasted fruit kernels with a coppery impression. The fruit then becomes rounder, and almonds emerge.
• Finish: Candied tropical fruit defines the aromatic finish. A delicate note of sage accompanies the long aftertaste.

Distillery/Bottler:

Hampden Estate is located in Trelawny, Jamaica, with a history as a sugar plantation dating back to the 18th century. For a long time, its rum was mainly supplied in cask to other bottlers. In 2009, Everglades Farms Ltd., owned by the Hussey family, acquired the estate. Hampden launched its own aged rums internationally in 2018, working with Velier on this step.

The distillery's range of different marks contributes to its distinctive identity. These represent more than different ester levels: the fermentation and distillation methods used for each also determine the style. The same distillery thus produces spirits ranging from lighter expressions to fruity or particularly aromatic ones. The Younger belongs to the historic LROK mark.
