Special Features:

At Hampden, the DOK mark denotes particularly ester-rich distillates. Named after Dermot Owen Kelly-Lawson, the recipe yields an ester content of 1,500 to 1,600 grams per hectolitre of pure alcohol in this bottling. Produced in pot stills, the rum combines intense fruit with pronounced medicinal and mineral impressions.

This rum was distilled in 2021 and bottled by Velier in 2025 after four years. It belongs to the third edition of the Magnum Series, which brings rum and photography together. The edition is dedicated to the Spanish photographer Cristina de Middel. The magnum bottle contains 1.5 litres at 60% and comes in gift packaging. The rum contains no added colouring and is not chill-filtered.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose opens intensely with burnt rubber, flambéed banana and roasted pineapple. Vetiver, iris and camphor add further layers. Jam-like apple and mirabelle plum notes gradually emerge, accompanied by acacia honey, vanilla and liquorice.
• Palate: The rum feels gentle and silky on the palate. Lemon and grapefruit bring a tart freshness, complemented by cut hay, alfalfa and grated ginger. Mineral and medicinal impressions of drawing charcoal, petroleum and Tiger Balm follow, before sugar cane becomes more prominent.
• Finish: Lemon remains present in the lively finish. Milky coconut notes, vanilla and hints of chamomile and savory infusions complement it. Chocolate notes emerge on the exhale, creating a pleasantly gentle impression. The empty glass reveals fresh notes of mustard seed and yellow plum.

Distillery/Bottler:

Hampden Estate is located in Trelawny, Jamaica. Sugar has been produced on the estate since 1753, and continuous pot-still rum production dates back to 1756. The Harris-Hussey family has run the business since 2009. One characteristic of Hampden's methods is the reuse of dunder, the residue from distillation, during fermentation. Long fermentation periods in open wooden vats, together with the traditional use of dunder and muck, contribute to the development of ester-rich distillates. These general distillery practices provide the background to Hampden's different marks.

Velier is responsible for bottling this edition. The Magnum Series began with an initiative by Luca Gargano in 2021: selected rums are paired with works by photographers from Magnum Photos, the agency founded in 1947. Following the first two editions, the third series focuses on Cristina de Middel.
