Hampden Fresh combines four of the distillery’s eight marks in an unaged white rum. The individual distillates come from double-retort pot stills. Bottled at a drinking strength of 42%, this small batch brings Hampden’s aromatic character to a more approachable style than traditional Jamaican overproof rums.

The release comprises 9,000 bottles. Fresh can be enjoyed neat or in cocktails such as a Daiquiri. It comes in a bottle containing 0.7 litres, without gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The fruit-led nose initially recalls raspberry spirit and kirsch. With air, cane sugar and honey with a geranium scent emerge. Later, cloves and a medicinal note reminiscent of Tiger Balm add to the bouquet.
• Palate: Zesty grapefruit and lime lead on the palate. Delicate liquorice notes give way to phenolic and oxidative impressions of macerated fruit. Towards the end, the grippy texture recalls the fibres of fully ripe sugar cane.
• Finish: The dense finish combines carnation, geranium and sugar cane flowers with candied ginger, star anise and lavender honey. A light lemon note accompanies lingering impressions of lychee, almonds and rose petals.

Distillery/Bottler:

Hampden Estate is located in Trelawny, Jamaica. For many years, the distillery sold its rums mainly in bulk. Under the Hussey family, it began ageing rum in casks on the estate in 2010. Its first aged releases under its own brand appeared in 2018.

For Fresh, Hampden uses molasses, natural yeasts and spring water. Fermentation also involves dunder, sugar cane vinegar and muck. Distillation takes place entirely in pot stills. The rum is distilled and bottled at Hampden Estate, with no added sugar.
